چکیده

Introduction. Traumatic injury to the cervical segment of spinal cord causes disability and quadriplegia. Upper extremity mobility restoration hand function for people with quadriplegia is a priority. With coordinated electrical stimulation peripheral muscles nerves, known as functional (FES), this possible. limb stimulators are designed increase physical controlled by users through preserved, uncoupled limited voluntary movements. Aim. By reviewing available literature, aim paper was prove importance FES in motor control ability upper limbs Material method. Using keywords "quadriplegia", "FES", "upper extremity", "functional ability", "motor control" "traumatic injury", three authors searched databases PubMed, EMBASE, SciELO, BMC, Academia according pre-established criteria. Edu, Web Science & Technology (November 2021 - March 2022). Potential papers were selected using Jovell Navarro-Rubio classification study design. Papers older than five years, that not their entirety, or English, excluded. Fifty-seven classified, six included research. Results. Functional improved extremities shortly after application. They cause neurophysiological changes central nervous system cortical reorganization depending on synchronization command successful execution planned task. Sensory important preservation neurological because synchronizing successfully executing task, neuroplasticity stimulated. Conclusion. emergence more research analysis obtained results, we can expect creation new programs improve recovery process extremities, greater degree independence daily life activities, better quality
